Are there any workarounds besides changing the permissions on the server?

These permissions work for us; some are not necessary for Macs, but are for Windows (we have both using these drop folders):

Files Only:
Read Attributes
Create Files/Write data
Create Folder/Append Data
Write Attributes
Write Extended Attributes

This Folder and subFolders:
Read Attributes
Create Files/Write data
Create Folder/Append Data
Write Attributes
Write Extended Attributes
Read Permissions
