So you've confirmed that your internet connection is working  
normally? You can get to various websites with no problem.


Its all good-- except as noted above.


The preference file for the softwareupdate tool is in root's home  
directory (because it must be run as root anyway). So first, try  
'sudo softwareupdate -l'. If that doesn't work, do 'sudo defaults  
delete com.apple.SoftwareUpdate'. That should delete any Software  
Update preference items for root. Then try again.
