Tiger Server and group share permissions amnesia

good morning all,

I have a Tiger server (10.4.4) running on a dual G5. My clients are a variety of eMacs and iMacs running Panther (10.3.9). The server is Open Directory, performing client and group authentication. The clients are managed mobile accounts. They are set to automount a group share (essentially, a central class/group folder with two sub folders - the first folder is read-only where students pick up assignments, and the second folder - write only - where they drop work). This setup works well and generally reliably however...

every now and then - for no logical reason at all (that I can see), the two folders in within this share return a message to the client that they do not have permissions to access it. Logging out and back in does not help. When I check the permissions on the server itself, all is fine. Permissions remain set for user/groups/everyone etc... To remedy this, I literally have to make a non permanent change to one item (usually I just click on the 'Everyone tab but change no setting) and then 'Save' and 'Refresh'. When the client logs back in, permissions are back to 'normal' again despite not changing a thing. Any ideas why Tiger Server and the clients seem to 'disagree' every now and then despite the proper settings?

thanks,
Patrick

note: I have ACLs enabled for the volume and wonder if it may be related to that? I don't use them (yet) but enabled it for future use.
