AD/UNC login problem

Description of our problem:

After a client is restarted, when we try to login with a valid AD user, the spinning wheel appears and spins forever. The only way to stop the spinning wheel is to hit the power button and put the system into standby. Once we hit any key and get out of standby, 2 things can happen. Either the login succeeds within a couple of seconds or the login prompt shakes and denies the user. If the login is denied, we can re-login and the login process is successful. Then, we can log any AD user without a problem until the system is restarted. Description of our Set-up:

(A) Windows 2000 server with SP4:
DHCP service is provided from this machine to all computers in the school
DNS service is provided from this machine
Active directory authentication to all the computers in the school (all windows and mac computers)
The network home folders are stored on this machine. The home folder is defined in the AD's user profile such as \\winserver\users\username

(B) Mac OS X Server 10.4.3:
Provides preferences to all the mac clients in the school

(C) 26 Mac OS X 10.4.3 or 10.4.4 (iMac and eMac)
   Configuration of Directory Access:
AD service enabled and bound with this option:
Use UNC path from Active Directory... network protocol to be used: smb

Thank you for your help. It is greatly appreciated.

Alain
