Sync time to local time server - not working?

Hi Folks

We have a small lab of old slot-loading iMacs which are running 10.3.9 and
are bound to Active Directory for authenticated logins. I configured the
image from which they were installed so that they pointed at one of our
domain controllers to synchronise the clocks. (The AD domain controllers
are our local reference for the "correct time". If the client clock differs
by more than about five(?) minutes from the domain controller then login is
denied.)

I had been under the impression that a check was run at startup and if the
clock was badly out it would be synchronised. The batteries on these
machines no longer hold the time if they are turned off, so this automatic
synchronisation is important if the users are to be able to authenticate
against AD.

We found today that the clocks are not always (ever?) automatically
synchronising at startup. This meant that a bunch of the machines were
unusable by the class which had them booked... A colleague had to attend
and log in to each machine using the local admin account and reset the
clocks manually.

I'm a little puzzled - I don't recall this being a problem with these
machines last year. Perhaps the batteries were borderline last year...

Anyway. Does anyone know of a way to make them synchronise automatically,
so that by the time the LoginWindow appears, the clock has been
synchronised?
