Importing Computers and Computer Lists into Open Directory

Step 1: Pre-create empty computer lists in Workgroup Manager with the
names of the lists you wish to have.

For example, create two lists in Workgroup Manager named:

Student iBooks
Teacher iBooks

Step 2: Make a single csv file that looks like this:

computer_name,mac_address,computerlist_name

For example:

iBook-1,00:11:22:33:44:55,Student iBooks
iBook-2,00:11:33:44:55:66,Student iBooks
iBook-3,00:22:44:55:33:22,Teacher iBooks
iBook-4,11:22:33:44:55:66,Teacher iBooks

Step 3: First import your computers into Workgroup Manager using the
Server --> Import option, then selecting your csv text file.

For duplicate handling, select "Ignore New Record"

Then, on the next screen, select Computers as the record type.

- Set your record delimiter to 0x0a or 0x0d depending on the tool you
used to create the file.
- Set your attribute delimiter to 0x2c (comma)
- Set your attribute value delimiter to something other than a comma

For field mappings:

Map "iBook-1" to Computer Name
Map "00:11:22:33:44:55" to Ethernet Address DO NOT MAP "Student iBooks"

Step 4: Next, you will import your computer list members into Workgroup
Manager using the same file with the Server --> Import option.

For duplicate handling, select Append to Existing Record

Then, on the next screen, select Computer Lists as the record type.

- Set your record delimiter to 0x0a or 0x0d depending on the tool you
used to create the file.
- Set your attribute delimiter to 0x2c (comma)
- Set your attribute value delimiter to something other than a comma

For field mappings:

Map "iBook-1" to Computers
DO NOT MAP "00:11:22:33:44:55"
Map "Student iBooks" to List Name

After completing these steps, you will have pre-populated your computer
lists.

John,

Hey this is awesome. I have been looking for a way to do this.
Although this question wasn't initiated by me, thanks for the great tip.
