Re: AD Mobile User Accounts & External Network

Jesse,

Maybe it has nothing to do with your problem but could it be a network time sync problem. Are your mobile users using the notebooks set to sync with a time server on your network? Maybe that is what is causing them to try to find something that is not there. I had that once on a trip. Couldn't get the laptop to connect to the external network so I turned off time sync in system prefs and that did it.

Hi Everyone

We are experiencing some problems with our Active Directory-bound notebooks and mobile user accounts.

In a nutshell, the accounts work expected when there is either on-campus network connectivity (wired and/or wireless), or no network connectivity whatsoever, but fail to work when users are connected to an external network.  It appears that when the machine is connected to an external network, it attempts to contact an Active Directory domain controller for authentication and can't, then freezes the machine.  Sometimes the machines will eventually timeout and login using the cached credentials, but it's hardly reliable or usable.

We have been telling our users to logout and turn-off AirPort before leaving campus, then login and turn AirPort back on when in the presence of an external network, but are curious if this is how the mobile accounts are supposed to work, or it's a mis-configuration or bug.  Our users are generally unhappy with the overall experience - especially those that forget to turn off AirPort before leaving campus.

Has anyone else experienced this, or a similar problem with mobile accounts and external networks?

Thanks in advance for your help and advice!
