users can't see home directory

I have looked in several places for information to solve this problem.
Here are the facts
Server 10.39- clients 10.39 student Home directories are on different sever than Authentication server
Newly created users are getting the following message when attempting to log on. (3 out of about 60)
I have set their directory back to none-this has solved the problem in the past sometime
reset the path to the correct server
login again- same message
 then
Deleted the home directory
Deleted the users in WGM
waited over- night and recreated  then again with the same uid- we use their student id number as the uid.
Tested again and the same error.
restarted the servers a couple of times in-between.
We are also seeing this when changing a student from and inactive account to  " able to login".
This is the error message
"Logging into the account failed because an error occurred.  The home folder for the user account is located on an AFP or SMB server."
We are going to run disk utility, maybe tonight.
Anyone have a suggestion for other things to try and or ideas why this may be happening-

thanks
