Re: Software Update is in the list of disallowed applications

I found the solution:
In WGM, i checked the settings for computerlists again. Clicked on "Details" and there was a suspicious entry "com.apple.applicationservice". I opened and found keys for "com.apple.creatorcode.swup". I deleted these keys and i was back in business - Software Update worked again.

At the login screen, immediately after entering your local admin password and pressing enter, hold down the shift key. You should now get a dialogue that will allow you to untick the box that says 'enable workgroup management'.
Software Update should now run. If this still doesn't work, check to see that the relevant computer list has the option enabled to allow administrators to disable workgroup management.

Good luck!

I prepared my "golden master" G5 mac with 10.4.11 and all applications. I created a master image with Netrestore Helper 3.3.6. This worked without any problem. I restored this image from my Firewire HD to several other G5 with Netrestore 3.3.6. This worked well except Software Update: This function is dead on the restored target macs. Clicking on the button under the Apple Menu does nothing, using this function within System Preferences launches a search for Updates, but gives no results. Strange. The golden master G5 does not show this behavior.
I checked the console log and found the following error message on the target mac:

/System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder: CG/CPS: The application 'com.apple.creatorcode.swup' at '/System/ Library/CoreServices/Software Update.app/Contents/MacOS/Software Update' is not permitted to launch because it is in the list of disallowed applications.\n

Why is it disallowed?
Where is this list?
How can i correct this?

Are you managing your clients through OD? That is generally the method used to disallow access to applications, though I can't say I've ever blocked software update before. If you are managing them, just verify that user error hasn't caused the issue.

Have you repaired permissions on one of the afflicted machines to see if it resolves the issue?

Mike

I did repair permissions before and after restoring - everything is clean, nothing changed.

Yes, we are managing our clients through OD. I logged in as the local admin to use software update, which should not be affected by management? Is this correct?
What we did: We created several computerlists and advised the macs on some of these lists not to show the "Shutdown" button at the login screen and to eject optical media on logout. Nothing else, as far as i can see. The problematic macs are all in one of these list. The master G5 is not a member.
I could not remember if it is possible to block software update and how, but my mind is a bit vague. Could you point me in the direction where to search?
