I tried to figure this out on 10.4 a while back and never put in the time to
quite get it. It appeared that the scheduled checks aren't actually in a
plist, but are tied into some background scheduling system.

You could try using a tool like fseventer to watch the file system while you
manually toggle the preference. That should show you where settings changes
are being made.
