This is a bug in Finder that must be fixed. I just downloaded a couple of
shareware games from epicware and mounted the disk image files. The images
mounted successfully, but they do not exist as far as the Finder is
concerned - not on the desktop, not in the Browser, nowhere. However "ls
/Volumes" shows that they are there and I can access everything from the
command line. Restart the machine and repeat the mount, and everything works
fine (until the next time it doesn't, of course).
