Can't change title of top-level menu

I'm trying to dynamically change the title of one of the top-level
menus, i.e. a menu in the Menu Bar, using [NSMenuItem setTitle:].
Though the title seems to change internally, it doesn't show up in
the UI. This works fine in changing a menu item within a pull-down
menu, but there appears to be something special going on for the
menu bar. Does anybody have any insight on how to get the changed
title to display properly?
