mail server in mac

Hi
Mac has it's smtp server sendmail.
I want to configure my system as a server for which I
had to do some settings.One of the option was
"HOSTNAME=-AUTOMATIC-" to
"HOSTNAME=host.yourdomain.whatever".This is the part I
am struck in.What should be given in
host.yourdomain.whatever ? I tried giving my IP .But
it doesn't work. Can anyone suggest what should be the
