classic equivalent to nsstatusitem?

Sorry, everybody, for posting a classic question here, but the MPW list is
completely dead since no one really uses it much anymore. Also, Cocoa
programmers have NSStatusItem as a reference point, which makes it easier to
ask the question.

So does anyone remember this trick from their pre-osx days?

How do i get something into the menubar in OS 9 and have it visible no
matter which app is in focus?

Hack or no hack, I need the answer to this.

Please understand my reasons for posting here about a Classis Mac OS issue.
If you're still mad, instead of flaming, please reply with a suggestion for
a viable, still-functioning, list that i could post this to.
