who is putting up this dialog?

The dialog, when I enter a non-number in this text field, reads:

Alert

Invalid number

Buttons: Discard changes / OK

The text field that causes this dialog has an NSNumberFormatter, and it is
also bound thru an NSObjectController to an NSNumber value.

If I remove the binding, but leave the NSNumberFormatter in place, the dialog
does *not* appear.

If I remove the NSNumberFormatter but leave the binding in place, the dialog
does *not* appear.

So what exactly causes the dialog? I don't see how to customize or prevent the
dialog because I don't know who is putting it up. m.
