Re: Creator code and file extension

Your problem might be just that the Finder has not recognized your change to the file's creator code or that it can't find Photoshop. You might want to try relaunching the Finder or log out/log back in instead of renaming the file to see if that causes the Finder to pick up your new settings.

Our application creates files with standard extensions (rtf, txt, rtfd), all of which are by default associated with TextEdit. We assign the files a creator code for our app, though, and everything works like a charm.

Hi All,

I know some folks consider creator codes and type codes evil and should be banished. However, many users of my batch imaging app have written to request for the option to bind the output files with the application of their choice. I found that a fair enough request and so am trying to implement it.

I believe my app is setting the creator and type codes correctly. However, the file extension seems to be taking precedence over the creator code.

As shown by GetFileInfo, the creator in this case is set to 8BIM (Photoshop). But double-clicking on this file still opens it in Preview. Now if I just rename this file to "jane" (removing the extension), double-clicking opens it in Photoshop.

After hours of Googling and searching this archive, I am at a loss. Isn't the creator code supposed to take precedence over the file extension? Any help appreciated.
