in IB, I make an NSObjectController (called MyFileController) associated with an object in my FileOwner (theSession)

In what sense "associated with"? Have you set the contentObject binding for the object controller? Does the content object actually exist (have you initialised it, and if so, when)? If the content object's 'currentLocomotion' value is set prior to nib loading, does that value appear in the text field?

I even included:
[ self willChangeValueForKey:@"currentLocomotion" ];
...
[ self didChangeValueForKey:@"currentLocomotion" ];
around the changing code in my setCurrentLocomotion method.
From my reading i don't think this is needed, as I set with the KVC method.

Correct, assuming you have not overridden '+automaticallyNotifiesObserversForKey:', that should not be necessary.
