A good idea - but since you're using it for gdb only, it would be better to define a macro in your ~/.gdbinit file:

define rc
p (int)[$arg0 retainCount]
end

Then you never have to worry about whether you added the utility function to your project or not, and you never have to worry about leaving it in when you ship. You can also forgo the function-call syntax when you invoke the macro.

I've found it incredibly useful to define a (global) function along these lines

unsigned rc(id inObject)
{
return [inObject retainCount];
}

which allows you to save on typing

p rc(myObj)
