Dictionary lookups for non-NSTextView clients?

Is it possible to look words up in the dictionary for non-NSTextView clients?

It appears NSTextView's contextual menu item is wired to a private method. Using the dictionary hotkey to look up the word under the mouse probably also involves private magic.
