Daemon with AppKit

Is there a way to get NSWorkspace Notifications in a command line tool? I am trying, unsuccessfully, to modify a faceless program that I created to true CL app. My app relies on notifications from the system when certain events happen like Apps launching or quitting and drives mounting or unmounting.

I have included appkit framework and linked against it, I don't get any build errors as I would expect if things were setup right. But I don't get the notifications that I expect and as I do with my faceless app.
