I thought older versions of OS X Server lacked that file entirely (but our 10.4.2 Server has it).


The oldest version of OS X Server I have access to is 1.2 (japes about certain other computer companies notwithstanding) and it indeed lacks that file - it instead has /System/Library/ CoreServices/software_version


Well, that settles it; the docs are bugged :)
We'll see how it pans out on Carbon-dev.


I wouldn't rely on "this is how Yellow Box does it" as a reason for Apple to make any changes...
