Problem with CIExposure example

I am having a bit of a problem in trying to change the example
CIExposure. 

The sliderChange method sets the variable exposureValue and displays the
result. 

 

However if I try to change this variable in other routines I add to the
same class it seems to have no effect when drawRect is executed.

Also variables created and used by other functions don't seem to be
being received in this function.

It's as if the drawRect function was in a different class to the rest of
the functions. 

 

 Anyone know why and how to get over it?
