LDAP Software ?

I'm writing a Cocoa application and I now need to access an internal LDAP directory to access information about people. Is there any software or sample code available that will allow me to do this easily from within a Cocoa app ? I have been looking at OpenDirectory/DirectorySerrvices SDK and that isn't too easy to use nor do I see how to access an internal LDAP directory without having it created beforehand using the Directory Access. There has to be an easier way to do this.
