Well it seems pretty excessive to me in general (though may just be
what NSURLConnection uses).

Roughly 1,5 years ago, I verified and reported a leak regarding synchronous URL connection calls.
The problem appeared some years ago, got fixed and appeared/ disappeared with
different OS X releases. As far as I remember, async calls behaved nicely.


I'm not sure regarding the state of this bug reports regarding current systems/your
system.
