Offhand it doesn't seem like you should use -mainWindow for this kind
of messaging anyway.  "Main window" has a specific meaning in Cocoa
which may not be what you think it is.

 It occurs to me that this is the main point of disconnect between
Timothy's expectations and reality. NSApp's -mainWindow doesn't mean
"the window I have in my nib".
