 So I'm gathering ...  I guess my main complaint is that nowhere in
the documentation does it actually state that you're losing data
(rasterizing a vector drawing and dropping transparency is a huge data
loss!).

  I'm still hopeful that there's a way to get basic paths and fills
without too much trouble. It seems inconceivable that this is so
non-trivial ...
