The non-trivialness of this (or rather, the reverse operation) was the
basis of several expensive programs during classic Mac-OS days, and the
entire point of switching over to Qwartz/PDF as a drawing archetecture. 
So that whether you were printing or drawing to the screen you would never
need to _do_ that conversion under normal use.  (For applications that
don't directly care what graphic formats things are in.)
