Detecting leaks at exit is fairly easy on Mac OS X.

... relatively speaking, yes. Included as part of XCode Tools are several applications that can help you track them down. Your approach is of course valid, but the tools in the /Developer/Applications/ Performance Tools/ folder should probably be the first suggestion.
