The original question has merit, though. It's nice to have warnings
pop up at app quit if you accidentally forget a -release somewhere.
We all make mistakes.
That's what the tools in the /Developer/Applications/Performance
Tools/ folder are for. There's no need to muddy the waters by adding
code to an application to self-diagnose. If your purpose is to find
leaks, use the proper tools.
