Re: Matchlock protection schemes

Not to beat this thread into the ground, but...

I'm alarmed at the thought of anyone endorsing hardware dongles. I think
that's a terrible message to send to developers.

As a 'user', I bitterly resent the way a dongle puts the entire onus on me -
any problem is my responsibility - despite having purchased the product.
Geez, think back to that long thread about upgrading a USB dongle to run the
upgrade of (was it ProfileMaker Pro? I forgot...), then when the user had an
issue with the upgrade, the older version dongle no longer worked, and... it
seemed to go on & on ...some long tortured journey.

And no user would ever have any other devices to put on their USB bus, so no
worry about potential conflicts, right.....Not!

Of course developers can & should protect their products. But there are
effective serialization schemes that are far less user hostile. I'm not real
fond of Web-based techniques, but *anything* beats the nuisance of a dongle.
Matchlock, in principle, is OK with me. Seems like it requires attention
from the developer's side as well, tho - the user shouldn't be left waiting
3 or 4 days for a match phrase to get emailed back from the company.
