System X vs. System 9 Epson drivers

I was printing out test charts last night in an effort to determine which
media settings were optimal for generating profiles on my Epson 870. Just
for kicks I printed them out through Photoshop 7 in both System 9 and
System X. Some things are happening that are a little disturbing.

1) On the System X prints (all of them, at varying degrees) there is a tint
over the entire printable area of the paper. Different media settings
produced different hues and densities of the tint. Premium Glossy Photo
paper had by far the heaviest tint.

2) The System X prints seem to be softer! I was outputting Profilemaker
charts and the text and patch definition was noticeably softer than the
same charts printed in System 9. Identical print settings were used in both
operating systems.

I suspect that the OS X Epson driver for the 870 is at fault and that Epson
is going to patch it in the (hopefully) very near future. Has anybody else
encountered this phenomenon? I would expect similar behavior with the 1270
drivers, as my understanding is that the 870 is just a skinny version of
the 1270.
