Gary,
Sorry for the delay. I just come back from a week at GATF with Don Hutchison
and Dave Hunter's Implementing Color Management seminar, and the consensus
was, after beating this issue to death for five days, to stay with TR-001,
in every respect. Because that's what 95% or all scans in North America are
created for in the first place. So, either use your own custom flavor of
TR-001 built from 1993 CGATS ANSI TR-001 colorimetric data (I use PrintOpen
but others can use Monaco or Gretag or Fuji or PerfX) with whathever black
generation you want or use Adobe's US WebCoated SWOP v2 profile, which is
based on TR-001 data anyway. But make sure to test and compare. Adobe's
incorporates some cheats in their profile which I don't entirely agree with,
like forcing a mapping between 255r 0g 0b to 100M 100Y (which is wrong in my
view, on colorimetric grounds) and so on, but I agree it's so widespread in
practice that it makes it an excellent candidate. The only problem with
using TR-001 is with the AbsCol proofing, which may or may not work for you?
In which case, try RelCol coupled with an inkjet sheet that has an L* close
to your regular printing substrate. In spite of this little annoyance, the
"correct" universal print condition aimpoint for North America (short of
talking GRACoL v7 for #1 printing) is no doubt TR-001, and I'm glad people
in the industry are finally coming to their senses with this respect.
