Right: how do we know that D50/2 agrees with our visual impression...

Right again. Human vision is too complex to be adequately replicated by the D50/2° model. But it's the best we can do for now, and honestly it's quite good already.

I am truly looking forward to the practical implementation of the color-appearance model CIECAM (who knows how many years down the line), which will incorporate elements of human vision not resolved by the purely colorimetric model, such as simultaneous contrast, visual effects (Hunt, Steven, etc.), discounting the illuminant, and so many others listed in Mark Fairchild's "Color Appearance Models" (2nd edition, <http://dogbert.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?y=16&isbn=0470012161&x=74>).

>From what I understand, CIECAM-based color management is not quite practicable yet, but when it promises to mark a great improvement in the color appearance of digital images.
