Why not make it based on L* like in LStar-RGB ( http://www.lstarrgb.com sorry, description in German only at this time) which describes the same gamut but with equidistant RGB values in the gray axis. When HP and Microsoft (not sure about the amount of Microsoft´s contribution, though) created the sRGB Profile they found Gamma 2.2 not to be ideal and modified the curve in the shhadow part so what looks pretty much like L*.
