Eye One Match - problems?

I use an Eye One with the Eye One Match software, (currently I'm using version 3.0), and I heard someone comment that there was a problem with a version of this software creating profiles that can make banding worse on outputs. Is anyone familiar with this, and if so can you tell me which version of the software to avoid?

This came up for me recently when we were printing 20" high prints of some comps for presentation to the client. In one of the images there was a face that was strongly side-lit so that one side fell off into shadow. When the image was examined in PhotoShop everything was fine, but when printed on the HP with a profile I had made there was severe banding on the face right at the transition to the shadows. When I soft-proofed the image in PhotoShop I saw the banding and could confirm it was a problem with the profile.

Interestingly that profile was made with the i1 CMYK target which just has one letter sized page. I had recently experimented with using the ECI 2002 target (4 letter sized pages) and that profile resulted in much less severe banding (though there was some). My thought had been that the smaller set of patches would give smoother transitions while the larger set of patches would result in a more accurate print appearance.

Could this be a problem with the software? Should I upgrade to the latest version (3.2)? Or could this be an inherent problem with the smaller target?

Thanks!

Dennis Dunbar
