Doug,

Actually you want to set the brightness all the way up (according to the Spyder directions) and follow the directions for contrast in the Spyder software.

Setting the brightness all the way up gives the calibration tool the biggest/best range to set up the screen profile.

I have a Spyder2 been using a gamma of 1.8, but you should be able to use either 1.8 or 2.2. I get a good rendition on screen and the prints I've been getting match the screen.
