Separate controls for backlight and brightness on LCD displays

While at work for a local SF Bay Area design firm recently, I came across
these LCD monitors that they have installed in their studio. They are 17"
LCD displays by Sony, model number SDM-HX73/S.

One thing I discovered while playing with the settings was that there are
separate controls for the backlight AND brightness.

This is the first time that I have encountered this specific arrangement. It
is somewhat confusing to me, because when luminance is too low or too high
I'm not quite sure whether it's the backlight or the brightness that I
should adjust, or a combination of the two. And if it's a combination, how
does one strike an optimal balance between backlight intensity and
brightness?

Are there any other LCD displays that have such separate controls? Any ideas
on how to approach this more nuanced way of adjusting luminance?

Thank you.
