Re: (Older Creo Eversmart scanners) G4 won't boot OS9

Hi Eric,
Thanks for your input! I will try the open firmware startup later (need some rest now!)
The firmware on my G4 Gigabit Ethernet is ROM  4.2.8f1. I don't remember when I installed it last, maybe for OS9.1. I can't find any information as for a later update on Apple.com

I just went through another page on the net that left me pretty discouraged:

http://www.macosx.com/content/faq.php/q1100/G4-Will-Not-Boot-From-Cd--Tricky-Problem.html

... and that one:

http://www.macminute.com/cgi-bin/wwwthreads/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=general&Number=231097&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=0&part=

It seems that others have had this issue and their posts mention every possible fix but no success...
>From all I have tried, I'm pretty sure that it is an internal or firmware problem. I might have to resort to an older computer for my scanner, but I would have wished it was that one and have a faster one to run CS2...

But time to get some rest here, I have been at it all day and my hair are getting scarce!
I'll let you know if the open firmware does any good.

Thanks again!
Paul

Does your G4 have the latest Firmware on it?

Ideally you would want to keep an older machine around for running OS 9 and your Creo scanner. There shouldn't be anything inherent in OS X.4 that would cause the machine to no longer boot into OS 9.

At startup you could also try booting into open firmware (command-option-O-F) at startup and typing in the following commands:
(be sure to include the hypens)

reset-nvram
set-defaults
reset-all

This may flush out any Open Firmware gremlins that are lurking on your logic board.

Good luck!
