RGB Printer Profiles on Canon IPF8000 printer

I have all but have given up on trying to profile my IPF 8000 via EFI ColorProof XF 3.0 for now and just stick with making an RGB profile.
This has opened up a whole can of worms. I read Bill Atkinson's FAQ on building RGB profiles and how critical it is to have the right paper selected in the printer driver which determines the amount of ink laid on the page. Question is there any "scientific" way of determining the "right" paper choice that will yield the best profile? I am profiling canvas and I have tried all three canvas setting on the 8000 and so far I am not to pleased with the results. What I mean by "scientific" is besides looking at Bill's profile test charts is there a way to integrate using an eye-one and the measure app to determine which paper choice would work the best? I own both ProfileMaker 5.08 and Monaco Profiler 4.8.
Thanks everyone.
