Monitor profiling - what is 'correct'

Hi

I'm testing some new monitor calibration software on my Apple 23" cinema
display - I try it out with an Eye One Pro, a Spyder 2 and an Eye One
Display2

All three calibrated at D65, L*

All three look subtly different -- how do I know which is 'best'? And for
that matter, what does 'best' actually mean? Does it really matter ;-)

I tried to get the sensors covering the same part of the screen. I also
looked at D65/G2.2, but the effect is similar. Am I perhaps just detecting
variation in the screen due to different sensor designs sampling different
amounts of the screen?

The differences are very slight - perhaps a slightly different looking
white. Noticeable if you switch between profiles, but any choice quickly
'looks' OK after a few moments use.

The monitor is a year or two old, and yes, I know it's not the best for
precise colour work :-)

Since any calibration is potentially only as good as the sensor you use,
could I just assume that since the Eye One Pro is much more expensive it's
any better?

Bye for now

Keith Cooper
