Re: Banding on Apple 23" Cinema Display

Hi Larry

I work at a retouching shop and back in early 2004 we installed 6 Apple 23" displays on our high-end color-correction workstations. By 2005 I had replaced every one of them with Eizo Monitors. Every one of the Apple displays  had developed uneven color across the screen and uneven lighting as well. Some had yellowing around the edges, other had pinkish or greenish bands. I returned several to Apple because they were less than a year old, and thy "fixed" them, but the problems returned within a couple months. At the time we were using Monaco to profile them and they would not hold a cal for more than a couple days. They all still "work" but now they are on non-color critical stations. Now all 12 of our retouching/color-correction workstations are using Eizos

I did a lot of research at the time, and many people reported similar problems with the 23" cinema displays, but NOT with the 20" or 30". Apparently the 23" models had some different vendors or something. Anyway, I was forced to give up on Apple displays after that. As Steve mentioned, its possible that your calibration system is playing a part, but try a simple test: clean up your desktop and set it to a neutral gray background - is it the same color and brightness all over? Does changing profiles make any difference?

If it is indeed the monitor, Apple WILL try to fix it, but in my experience the problem will return. If you go to the Apple discussions (http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=112 ) You can still find lots of people having problems with the 23" displays. Good luck

Hello All,

Has anyone had problems with color banding on an apple 23" CD or other apple flat panels?  I a m shooting jewelry (Imacon 528C -H1- - 16 bit files) on a middle gray sweep.  I have a small spotlight hitting the background behind it creating a glow with the tones ranging from a light gray in the center to a charcoal gray at the edges.  I am getting banding in the transition areas.  I thought it was in the file and tried for hours to get rid of it.  Changed lights twice, changed the angle of the light, tried  diffusion material, changed lenses, software, restored calibration files, monitor profiles, and recalibrated the monitor.  Finally tried a printout on my epson 2200 and the bands weren't  there.  So then I plugged in my old LaCIe CRT and couldn't see the bands there either.  Then tried it on a mac G4 powerbook and Mac Powerbook and had banding on both. Then I tried it on a cheapo CRT and there was no banding.   I have had this display for about 9 months and have never noticed this problem before.  Can anyone help me to determine definitively that  the problem is with the monitor and not in the file so I can feel confident about handing the files off to the client?  Also, if it is the monitor, is it a defect or a shortcoming of the monitor,  and can anything be done to correct it.  Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance,
Larry Stein
