The fact that the blue from the LED is fairly broad (compared to the narrow spikes that you get from mercury in a standard fluorescent lamp) would help, but it's still rather bumpy compared to an incandescent lamp, and phosphors degrade.

Are there any general-use spectros using LED illuminants (eg.
instruments from Minolta ?)

Well of course the DataColor PrintFixPro2.0 uses LED's, but in the reverse configuration from usual spectrometers (narrow band illumination, wide band detector).
