VirtualAudioDriver vs PhantomAudioDriver

Poking at the code, would someone please shed some light on
what are the major differences between the following two:

AppleOnboardAudio/VirtualAudioDriver/

IOAudioFamily/Examples/PhantomAudioDriver/

I notice that the VirtualAudioDriver is distributed as part of
10.2.5.
