Actually, I take that back. The one bit of middle ground that is offered to you in this system is hog mode. When you hog a device, it becomes yours and you can do with it what you please, including slamming settings to your heart's content. You can be sure that no other app will be able to change the settings while you own hog mode on a device.

The are two catches. First, aggregate devices (and some non-IOAudio- based devices) can't be hogged. Second, hogging a device makes it unavailable to other apps which is not the most user-friendly approach.
