This seems rather odd in that our applications use mixed sample rates all the time, simultaneously in some apps. Wave Editor uses audio layers, where each layer can be different numbers of channels, different bit depths and different sample rates. Though we can interchange Apple's converters with iZotope's Resampler, we've gotten very few if any particular complaints about the quality of the playback while using mixed sample rates...
