From my own observation I would say it doesn't work. Trying to run glxgears over a forwarded X11 connection, I see that it opens a window but doesn't display anything inside and gives the message


  failed to bind to surface

An explanation could be that /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.dylib is linked to the GL framework.
