I seem to recall hearing that scp has an option for it.

I am not sure whether or not there's a complete list.  I am also dreading
what happens when a user makes a "safe" tarball on a Tiger machine and
opens it on a Panther machine... I do not feel entirely confident that the
boundary conditions will be handled gracefully.
