Done. Thanks for the advice from all. The lsof problem appears to persist even under low load, but fs_usage has done what I need for now.

FWIW, the problem seems to be intermittent and not to depend on load or anything else that is obvious. It can persist for days, and then go away, without rebooting or logging out/in.
