Re: Cancel Sleep

What about scenarios such as a macbook air (or any other laptop) connected to wifi? Many offices have almost full wifi coverage. Wouldn't it be safer/easier to walk around with the lid closed in a bag than with the screen open?

a1) [NSTask launchedTaskWithLaunchPath:@"/usr/bin/say" arguments:[NSArray arrayWithObject:@"Finishing Copy Before Sleep"]];
b) Still connected to wifi, hopefully have enough battery charge. Im sure you could try to find a way to check the remaining battery level, compare it to a estimated time for completion. If the battery level is too low, or the wifi connection drops you could then go to sleep.

If you dont want to violate the user preferences for sound/speech/etc, the user would still be aware of the delayed sleep because the LED wont pulse.

What happens if you start a file copy to/from a server in Finder and
then put the machine to sleep? I hope it either warns the user or
completes the copy before sleeping.

If the user performs the "normal" sleep sequence for a laptop:

- closes the lid
- removes the network cable, power cable, etc.
- places the laptop into a laptop bag

I defy you to find a means of either

a) warning the user
b) completing the copy

that does not violate other user preferences (speech off, sound off, no bluetooth, inbuilt taser disabled, etc.)

An earlier poster cited Raskin's policy of "forgiveness", but made the common mistake of assuming that being forgiving means doing what a singular individual (in this case, the poster) wants, rather than picking a policy that does the least harm in a wide range of situations.
