Thanks, Terry. That may very well be half of the cause.
The other half, based on additional findings since my first post: The aforementioned gcc 4.2.1 returns the exact same error "making" gettext 0.16 independent of "jhbuild", but compiles the latest stable gettext 0.17 from source just fine. So it seems at least part (if most) of the problem lies with the gettext 0.16 code, that gtk+ for Mac OS X unfortunately currently builds against.
Apple's gcc 4.2 build 5553 seems very viable on 10.4.11, since I've built successfully from the latest Squid 3.0stable7, squidGuard 1.3/1.4alpha, freeradius 2.0.5, BerkeleyDB 4.7.25 sources.
